Properties: white or off white crystalline powder. Galactose is oxidized by nitric acid to form galactose diacid, commonly known as mucus acid. Solubility in water: 3 g / L (14 ºC), solubility in 1n NaOH: 4%. Insoluble in alcohol and ether. Mucus acid has low solubility and precipitates crystals in water. Therefore, D-galactose and nitric acid are often used to check the existence of galactose or lactose. Mucus acid is an internal racemate and has no optical activity
